DATING ADVICE / DIFFERENT CITIES
Two Careers, One City: Can Your Plans Fit Together?
Imagine you work in Bengaluru and someone you want to keep seeing is based in Mumbai. Before either of you promises to move, separate what you would consider from what your work and life currently allow.
You do not need a relocation plan before a first date. But if living in the same city matters to you, find out whether either person sees that as a possibility.

Is Moving Possible, Conditional or Off the Table?
For professional singles dating across Indian cities, “open to moving” can mean very different things. Name your position as it stands today. These are descriptions of what is possible, not levels of commitment.
| Current position | What to say clearly | What remains to be checked |
|---|---|---|
| A confirmed move | The destination and expected timing, including whether the move is temporary. | Whether that city and timing fit the other person’s plans; a move already decided does not settle a relationship decision. |
| Possible under specific conditions | The condition, such as a suitable role becoming available, and whether you would want the move if it did. | Who can confirm that condition and which parts remain outside your control. |
| Willing to explore, not yet checked | Your openness is genuine, but you have not established whether a move is workable. | The first concrete enquiry, rather than a date you cannot yet promise. |
| Not considering a move now | You intend to stay in your current city; the other person should not plan around you changing your mind. | Whether they can genuinely accept a relationship on that basis, without expecting a later concession. |
Check the Work Constraint Behind the City
The question is not whether your occupation is “portable”. It is what would have to change in your own role. Consider these possible situations:

A company role
Your employer may have an office in the other city without having a place for your role there. Before treating a transfer as an option, ask the appropriate workplace contact whether your particular role could move and what approval would be needed.
Hybrid or remote work
Permission to work from home may still be tied to your current location or some office attendance. Confirm whether working from the proposed city would be allowed on an ongoing basis. Occasional remote days do not answer that question.
Independent practice or a family business
Clients, premises or duties that require your presence may be the real constraint. Identify which responsibilities could continue from elsewhere and which would need someone on site. Do not promise a move on the assumption that those responsibilities will simply disappear.
Match the Conversation to the Stage of the Relationship
When you are first getting to know each other, establish whether dating across cities is acceptable at all. One possible opening is: “I’m based in Bengaluru and don’t currently have plans to move. Would that make a relationship difficult for you?” You are describing your starting point, not asking for a relocation commitment.
When you both want to keep dating, ask whether you can actually spend time together while based apart, and mention any known limit on continuing that way. Keep an untested work option honest: “I’m open to exploring a transfer, but I don’t know yet whether it’s possible.”
When you discuss living in the same city, put the available options, their dependencies and a point for reviewing them into the conversation. Before either person acts on an assumption, check that the other has agreed to the same plan—not merely expressed interest in a future together.
Compare the Options Without Choosing for Each Other
Consider only options both people are willing to discuss. For each, weigh work feasibility, how you would continue meeting and what each person would give up. A lower income or a particular gender does not assign anyone the move.
If Neither of You Wants to Move
If you both intend to stay where you are and both require a partner in the same city, your current plans do not fit. That mismatch says something about location, not how much either career or person deserves to matter.
If a future change might make a difference, identify it. An actual decision about a role gives you something to revisit; hoping that someone will eventually feel differently does not. Waiting is useful only when you both understand what you are waiting to learn.
Where no option is acceptable to both of you, acknowledge that limit without assigning blame. You do not have to make an immediate decision about the whole relationship, but neither person should be asked to continue on the basis of a move they have declined.
Agree on What You Need to Find Out Next
Before another conversation about the future, separate the facts you share from the answers you still need. A brief note for yourselves can keep a possible move from becoming a promise by repetition.
- What we know
- Each person’s current city, willingness to move and any decisions already confirmed.
- What still depends on something else
- The unresolved work or location condition, and whose answer would clarify it.
- What each person will check, and when we will talk again
- A named next step for each person with something to confirm, plus a review point even if the answer is still pending.
